6/30/11: Halfway!!

Okay so I don't think it's technically halfway but in month form it is.  I'm halfway through this project!  I'm happy I've kept up with it so far.  I'm really excited for when the year is over so that I can turn this blog into a book that we can keep for years and years to come.  I really think it will be something neat to look back on in the future.  I still plan on blogging in 2012 but probably not everyday.  If anyone is thinking about doing this in 2012, I totally encourage you to do it!

6/29/11: Ch Ch Ch Chia!!!

(*Note, this post is originally from Paul's blog buckeyerunner.blogspot.com under the Chia Seeds page)
Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia!!!

No, this article is NOT about the Chia Pet, however, it is about Chia seeds.  I know all of you are asking, "Why the hell is he talking about Chia Seeds?"  Well, in a nutshell, because I read it in a book.....

Chia Seeds

I first learned about Chia Seeds while reading the book Born to Run In there, the author, Christopher McDougall, talks about a time when he was running in the canyons with the Tarahumara Indian tribe and he was given a drink that made him feel re-energized shortly after taking it.  It turns out, what he drank was a variation of the chia seed drink iskiate, or chia fresca.
I am not a health nut by any means, but after reading about how the Tarahumara Indians live off of this and Pinole, while running anywhere from 50-100 miles PER DAY.  Yes, per day.  I will get into more about the Tarahumara Indians and their culture in a future post.  Anyway, back to why I am on a chia seed kick.  I read up on the benefits of it, which actually helps out runners tremendously (I'll tell you why in a minute):

  • Chia is very rich in omega-3 acids, containing more omega-3's than a more popular seed the flax seed.
  • They provide fiber (25 grams gives you 6.9 grams of fiber)
  • They contain other important nutrients such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, molybdenum, niacin, and zing.
  • If you allow the seeds to sit in water for 20-30 minutes (shorter if shaken up), the seeds form a gel.  This gel can be used to slow down the process by which enzymes break down carbs and convert them to sugar.
  • Chia seeds hold 10-12 times their body weight in water, keeping you hydrated longer without the need to drink water all the time while running.
There is more Omega-3 in it than salmon, more calcium than 2% milk, and more antioxidants than fresh blueberries.  They are also extremely energizing. I have found it to be a great replacement to my daily double shot of espresso.
For a distance runner, it provides not only the above advantages, but also help to slowly release carbs into the bloodstream.  It is the perfect natural replacement for all of those energy gels you are spending your money on.

Chia Seed Uses

I bought this 3lb bag of Chia Seeds off of Amazon for $15 (click the link to take you directly to the page).  This should last me quite a bit, and is much cheaper than all the health food websites that charge you 3 times as much for this same amount.

Chia Gel

Looks delicious right?  That is a chia gel.  I mix 1/3 cup of chia seeds to 1 cup water.  I shake it for 15-20 seconds, let it sit for a minute or two, then shake again.  It immediately begins to form a gel, which can then be added to salads, smoothies, muffins, cereal, almost anything you want really.  Chia seeds don't have a taste.  Whatever you use it in, it will taste as if the chia seeds are not even in it.

Chia Fresca

Yum, right?!?!  This is Chia Fresca.  It is the energy drink I use before going out on a run.  I take one tablespoon chia seeds, and about 10-12 ounces of water, shake for 15 seconds, let sit for about a minute, then add some lemon or lime juice and a small amount of sugar or honey for an added sweetness to it.  I keep them in the fridge so that when I drink them it is actually a refreshing chilled drink.  It's not chunky or gross drinking it either.

6/28/11: Happy 2nd Birthday Ace!

It sure does feel like he's been with us for more than 2 years.  Ace is the youngest yet largest of all of our animals although, he thinks he's the size of the cat.  Speaking of the cats, he loves to play with Roman.  Roman likes to play back until Ace flattens him with one of his huge paws.

When we got Ace it was for a few reasons.  One, Kalie was being totally dominated by the cats in this house and really needed someone to run around with.  Some days I wish they would stop the running and wrestling. We figured it was a good time to get a puppy since Paul was at home at the time.

Ace likes to spend his days wrestling with Kalie, playing with the cats, sticking his head in the garbage, and running around outside.  His bark is definitely bigger than his bite except when it comes to the kids.  He follows them around everywhere inside and outside and is extremely protective.  I love that quality in him but it does get annoying when he wants to leave the yard every 5 seconds to follow them around.

It's hard to believe he looked like this when we brought him home:

6/27/11: Happy 3rd Birthday Morgan Reese!

I have a rant before I begin this post.  In my attempt to post these pictures from Morgan's birthday I lost about half of them to corruption.  Erghhh.  Luckily I was able to recover some but I am not a happy camper.

It's hard to believe that it's been 3 years since we started adding to our growing family.  We had a busy day planned for Morgan's birthday.  We started the day off picking strawberries with Mackenzie and Aunt Kelly.  Morgan did a great job and Rylee spent most of her time picking strawberries and popping them right in her mouth.  She was pissed if I yanked her away from any.  After strawberry picking we all headed to McDonalds to grab some lunch.

Daddy had taken a half day from work so he could come home and take us to the pool!  We spent a few hours there and although she was nervous about the slide at first, it was hard to pull her away from it when we left.  Unfortunately the pictures of her on the slide were some of the ones that were lost.  We came home and ate some dinner and then then Morgan, Paul, and I headed to see Cars 2.  It was Morgan's very first movie and she was so excited!  She didn't quite make it through the entire movie but she had a great time!

I just can't really wrap my head around the fact that she is 3 now and will be heading to preschool in the fall. Everyday she is learning something new. She is hilarious and frustrating all at the same time.  She is an incredible big sister to Rylee and loves to play with her now.  She is a technology expert as she can grab any phone or get on the computer and know exactly how to use them like a pro.

We love you Morgan Reese!  Happy 3rd Birthday!!

6/26/11: Graduations and Cruisin

Today was my youngest cousin Mark's graduation party.  Mark is the youngest of the grandchildren on my dad's side of the family and the fact that he is 18 makes me feel extremely old. I'm pretty sure he was in Kindergarten when I was a Senior. Holy smokes.  Enough about my age...

Morgan, Mackenzie, and Rylee spent most of the time playing in the yard with the soccer ball or on the slide. Morgan was very into hanging from the trees though.  Whatever entertains them, right?

When we got home Morgan and Rylee decided it was a nice night for a little drive.  Morgan took the two of them around the neighborhood a few dozen times and then they called it a night.  Rylee was very excited to be a passenger.  Morgan's jeep has 4 different songs or "stations" on the radio and Rylee was very enthralled with pushing the buttons and then jamming out.  Other than the times when they fight, it's so nice that they are able to play together independently now.

6/25/11: Morgan's 3rd Birthday Party

Today was the day of Morgan's 3rd birthday party.  She has been waiting for this day for FOREVER!  Minus it being a little chilly out, the day turned out perfect!  Morgan spent most of the party asking me when we could open presents and when she could have cake. She really likes to get to the business at hand.

She got tons of great gifts including a laptop, a basketball hoop, and some games for her leapster. Paul has been banned from shooting the basketball in the house because well, he sucks at it and almost broke a few items on my mantle.

I did almost lose a finger and possibly more during this party when I was stuck with a drug needle.  My dear Grandmother's 89 year old friend made that Raggedy Ann doll you see me holding in the picture above.  I went to move it and got stuck by a needle.  Either this sweet woman forgot to finish the doll or she's trying to smuggle drugs inside of the doll and accidentally left her drug needle behind. Hey at least it was me who was injured as opposed to Morgan's 1st birthday when Paul poked her in the eye with a Barbie hand.  We live and we learn people, we live and we learn.

6/24/11: This is what happens...

When I leave Kelly unattended with my children.  I always come back to find them in matching outfits and hairdos.  Since tomorrow is Morgan's birthday party I headed to pick up her cake from my friend Becky.(The same one who did Rylee's cake, check her out!) Kelly was kind enough to come watch the girls for a few hours for me.  I picked up some food on the way home for us and came home to this.  I have to admit, they are cute.

Morgan then left me and Rylee and took off with Kelly and Mackenzie for the day. Instead of being productive, I watched Bravo. Great use of time Kristy!  Ah well it was relaxing not to be asked 8 million questions for a few hours.

Longest eyelashes ever! Jealous!

Later they came back and everyone had a sleepover!  Before I went to bed I went to check on the girls and this is how I found them.

6/23/11: 15 weeks 2 days

I promise not to turn this into a pregnancy blog. No one wants to hear me moan and groan so I'll keep strictly pregnancy related posts to a minimum.  It's been about a month so I'll give a quick update.

Yup, that's me in all my pregnant glory.  Let's face it what you see is bloat that's turning into a bump.  I really, really don't want to jinx myself, but this pregnancy is going really smooth. No morning sickness, no aches or pains yet.  In fact, most days I forget that I'm pregnant.  In about 20 weeks (or less probably) I will probably rue the day that I gloated to the internet about what a fabulous pregnant lady I am these days. My only major complaint is headaches.  I got them with both girls about this time too. At my last appt I meant to ask for an RX that I had gotten before and I forgot.  Luckily I have an appt next week and we can remedy this situation.

Baby is the size of an orange and can hear us now! An orange with ears!  I'm sure he/she is overjoyed at the wonderful sounds from outside the womb. If this baby goes past his/her due date, I'm sure we all know why.  I can't say I blame him/her.

Okay, I've rambled enough. Boring pregnancy post = over. :)

6/22/11: Time is running out!

I ended up committing to work 3 full days this week and feel really behind with everything.  I've been spending the last few nights staying up trying to complete all of Morgan's decorations.  These are my latest creations.  I'll be happy when 2011 birthdays are over.  I need a break!  Her party is Shrek themed and she is so very excited.  It makes it worth when I finish something and she squeals with excitement that it's for HER party and she LOVES IT!

6/21/11: Fried Pickles!

Have I mentioned my love of pickles before?  Well I do.  I love them like a fat kid loves cake.  I've gotten jars of pickles for my birthday, that's how much I love them.  I also like to drink the juice. Don't judge.  There is nothing better than combining fabulous idea of fried food with pickles. NOTHING!  Voila! Fried pickles it is people!!!!

For those of you that think this is totally pregnancy related, it is in no way shape or form.  Although I do admit I get a hankering for them a lot more often these days.  I won't lie either, I got these from On Tap and totally got their Hot Artichoke dip too. Dinner of champions!!
