Rylee and Tenley: Surgery Day!

Rylee has always had sensitivity issues since she was a baby. She had silent reflux, needed sensitive formula and has terrible eczema. As she got older we started to notice that she constantly had a "head cold" from about October through April.  She got tested for lots of different things before we were finally referred to an allergist. I would have bet a million bucks that this kid had some sort of seasonal allergies. They did the little poke test on her back for about 12 different allergies.  I was STUNNED when nothing came back positive.  The allergist then said that sometimes kids can have enlarged adenoids that can produce the same symptoms as seasonal allergies.  We then got referred to the ENT.  Once there, Rylee got some X-Rays and it was confirmed that her adenoids were indeed enlarged and needed removed. Great. We scheduled surgery for October.

A few days later I got to thinking.  While Tenley definitely didn't have the same issues as a baby that Rylee did, she would always get a runny nose from Oct-April just like Rylee.  It just never ended.  The more I thought about it I realized if Tenley was eventually going to need the same surgery, why wait?  I'd rather get them both out of the way at the same time.  I scheduled an appointment for her at the ENT and lo and behold, she had enlarged adenoids as well.  So I rescheduled Rylee and got her and Tenley in on the same day.

Today was that day. They weren't allowed to eat or drink anything in the morning and I wasn't exactly sure how that was going to go.  These girls love their milk. And their food.  Surprisingly it was okay and they didn't seem bothered by it.  We arrived at Akron Children's around 10 am and got all signed in and headed up for the pre-surgery stuff.  The staff was really great with the girls and got them all ready to go.  They were especially excited to pick their own chapstick flavor to go in the little thing they would have to breath the gas through.  Rylee was set to go first and they took her back around 12 pm.  The surgery itself I think only took about 15 minutes.  Thankfully the girls did not have to get their tonsils out, which I'm hearing is a much more painful recovery.

Around 12:30 Tenley got to go back and by that time we were able to go see Rylee in recovery.  Poor thing was completely out of it and just sobbing. I felt so bad for her.  While we were sitting with her we got to see Tenley being wheeled out of the operating room screaming bloody murder.  She was even more out of it than Rylee.  We all got some cuddles in before heading to the second recovery room.

In the second recovery room the girls got some popsicles and were able to rest for a little bit before going home.  We ended up being sent home around 3:00, both girls were doing fine.  All in all the surgery was pretty simple and quick.  They didn't seem to have much in the way of pain and recovered pretty quickly.  They did run low fevers for about the next week and had GOD AWFUL breath.  It was horrible.  There were times that I literally thought one of the dogs had an accident in the house just to realize that Rylee was breathing on me. Gross.  I'm glad we had it done at the same time and got it over with. Even if I was 36 weeks pregnant.

Little patients the day after. :)
