I ran my first race post-Beckett this past Saturday. It was a gorgeous day which was a nice bonus because you never know what you are going to get in April in Ohio. I will admit, I was a tad nervous because it had been about 18 months since I last ran a race. I've been training for the CLE half in May and really wanted to get one race under my belt before then. I was pretty proud of myself! I ended up with my best "official" race time at 34:04. The only thing I hate about actual races is the early morning start time. I'm just not a person that works out in the morning, especially running. It just doesn't work for me. I am not looking forward to getting up at like 4am for the CLE half marathon but what are you going to do?? Paul and Ashley also ran (Ashley's first official 5K) and did great! Bring on the half!!

Preschool Spaghetti Dinner
Morgan's preschool hand their annual Spaghetti dinner at the end of September which just happens to be their biggest fundraiser. Since I'm on the preschool board I have quite a bit of involvement with this fundraiser. Which clearly means this was not the week to get violently ill, but I did, and so did Paul. Earlier that week on Wednesday both Paul and I spent time (separately) in the emergency room. We both came down with some awful stomach bug or something. Paul was even throwing up blood at one point. It was not good. We both became extremely dehydrated which of course warrants some IV fluids. The day of the spaghetti dinner was also the day of the Akron Half. I had made plans for weeks to juggle everything I had to do that day. It all went to shit though because I wasn't able to run. Something that I won't lie, I'm still struggling with a little bit. I've spent the entire year since I've had Tenley training. This was supposed to be my grand hoorah and instead I got lots of vomit and a lecture from my dad. Enough of my pity party....
I ran all my fundraiser errands earlier in the day and then came home to get the kids ready. Every parent has to work a shift and I was the ticket taker for the second part of the dinner. We went up right when it started so we could eat before I had to start working. The kids got all dressed up for the occasion.
Grandma and Grandpa plus Corey and Ashley came to support both Morgan and Mackenzie. I'm not sure what is even happening in this picture below.
Rylee - wanting me to steal a base.
Working hard or hardly working?
We had some raffle baskets that we're a huge hit this year! Here are a some pictures of a few.
Most of all the girls have a great time seeing their friends and running around and playing. Also, the preschool raises money to help them throughout the year with expenses. A great time was had by all!

Cleveland 10K
About a week before I went back to work and about 6 weeks after I had Tenley I made a commitment to get back in shape and lose the baby weight. I knew I had to stick with it since my sister's wedding is this August. In order to keep myself accountable I signed up for Weight Watchers and I also got the crazy notion to sign myself up for the Cleveland 10K. After I had Rylee I made it a goal to run a 5K and I did. This time I wanted to set my sights a bit higher so I could push myself. At the same time Paul made the decision to run the Half Marathon.
I stuck with my training, even though it got pretty hot the weeks leading up to the 10K. I was having some knee issues and was starting to wonder if I would be able to actually RUN the whole distance without stopping. The 10K actually started at a separate time that the half and the full, so I knew Paul wouldn't be around at all to keep me going. Luckily I wasn't running alone. A couple of my mommy friends had signed up too! They were also 10K virgins so that put me a little more at ease. Except for Becky who is super woman and ran her first full marathon!
Here we are pre-race:
Another thing that kept me going during my run was thinking of my friend Jen and her sweet little girl Ainsley who had passed away the week earlier after a long battle in the NICU. Becky and her husband made these awesome signs for us to pin to our back and run with that said Running in Memory of Ainsley. If I ever felt the need to stop (which thankfully I didn't!) or push a little harder, I thought of that sweet little girls face and how brave and strong her and her family were during her short life.
Here is us with our signs:
I have to say, I'm not a morning person, let alone a morning exerciser. We were able to stay with Mindy in Lakewood the night before but we still had to get up around 4:45 am to trek our way to downtown Cleveland. Once we got down to the race the whole hype and adrenaline of everything started to kick in. I was REALLY nervous to start but away we went. It was hot. Really hot. I started out and pretty much knew after the first mile that it was going to be a good run. My knee wasn't hurting and I really felt in the zone. My goal was to finish under 1:15:00. I ended up finishing in 1:12:26. Crossing that finish line was one of the prouder moments of my life. I'm not a runner by any means and that is what makes these accomplishments that much more awesome! I went from feeling like I was going to pass out on C25K Week 1 Day 1 to running 6.2 miles!
I'm also proud to say that Paul finished his first Half Marathon even though he had minimal training due to some injuries. I'm clearly in better spirits post-race than he was.
I ran into a few old friends there and we got to catch up with Pauls cousin Dee and husband Joe who also ran the half. Speaking of Halfs, somehow I decided it would be awesome to run the Akron Half. We'll see how awesome it is running in the summer heat! Wish me luck!

10/15/11: Bowman 5K
Today 3 of the 4 of us participated in the Bowman 5K. Morgan still wasn't feeling that well and it was kind of crummy out but we did it anyway. She wasn't a happy camper to get up early to go do this but once we got started she was okay. She did however decide throughout the course that she just wanted to walk and not run. I heard some "I wanna go back to bed" and "where is Daddy?"
Daddy finished in a time of 23:06 and came back afterwards to run with Morgan but she insisted he carry her a little ways. We ended up finishing in around 1 hour and both Morgan and I were dead last. LOL. She claims she had fun though and really enjoyed the snacks afterwards and says she wants to do it again next year.
After the race we took our annual after race trip to Starbucks and set up outside to watch the Homecoming parade which was easily the best part of the girls morning. They came back with an entire back of candy and gizmos. We all took some long naps and spent the rest of the day at home recouping. Nice little family Saturday!

9/24/11: Akron Marathon Relay
This past Saturday I participated in my first big running event, ever. Even though I have been running for nearly two decades, I never made it 15 minutes down the road in Akron to be apart of the Akron Marathon and one of its running events. This year, I was finally able to find a relay team to run on.
Approximately 16,000 runners ran in the event in some capacity this year, whether it was the full or half marathon, or the 5 person relay team. The picture above doesn't do justice to the amount of people gathered on N. Broadway St. just before 7am to get ready to race.
There were so many people, that Eric and I stood at the starting line to watch everyone take off. We stood there for almost 10 minutes for the last person cross the starting line.

I ran the 5th leg of the relay, a 7.9 mile run from the top of Sand Run Park through neighborhoods, including a quick run through Stan Hewitt Gardens and into downtown. I felt good most of the way, except the few times that I choked on the water I tried drinking at the water stations. Turns out throwing water at your open mouth isn't the best way to get it down.
I got to try out the Saucony Progrid Kinvara 2 shoes for the first time in a race (next month I try out the Nike Frees in a race). They just so happen to match my outfit, with the neon green shoes, shirt, and black running shorts with the neon green stripe. The only thing out of place was the red bandana I had on my head.
I felt my pace was good through the first 5 miles, right around the 8 minute mark, if not a bit faster. One of the things I wasn't prepared for was that the first 6 miles of my 8 mile run was a constant run uphill. Sure, the last 2 miles was straight down into downtown, but it was a slow climb that eventually took its toll on my legs.
My training for this race wasn't what it should have been. My longest training run was between 5 1/2 and 6 miles, 2 miles shorter than the race itself. I also have been battling a knee injury that I am going to get checked out this week. More on that later.

Between miles 6 and 7, I used the downhills to my advantage, or at least, to the best advantage I could get. The last mile was probably the most brutal mile I have ever run. Once I crossed the finish line, getting my team a sub 4 hour time, my arms, legs, and feet were all numb. My legs and feet were the worst, with my feet the worst overall. I am sure it was due to me stopping running and my feet swelling a bit in my shoes that were tied on tight.
One of the coolest part of the race was the finish. We finished the race by running down Main St. and into the back of the Akron Aeros stadium. They opened up the doors in center field and you ran toward the crowd sitting in the stands.
With all this being said, and the pain I had from running just 8 miles, I caught the bug. I am already starting to increase my mileage to prep myself for a marathon run next year at Akron. The sights, sounds, fans, and the other runners make you want to get out there and do it yourself. I had already planned on running a marathon soon, as I want to qualify for Boston some day, but this just sealed the deal for me even more.

9/23/11: The Expo
Friday night was the Road Runner Akron Marathon Expo in downtown Akron at the Knight Center. I met up with Eric, the 4th leg of our 5 man relay team, at the Expo to get him registered and check out the Expo itself.
I have never been to a running event Expo, and to be honest, I was kind of disappointed with it. It was too crowded, with everyone shuffling along to get their technical running shirt at the end. There were many shops set up with running gear to buy, along with Bath Fitter. I mean hell, why not have a Bath Fitter booth? Dumb....
The biggest disappointment was not seeing any of the special guests there, including some Biggest Loser contestants, and the person I really wanted to see, Hal Higdon.
Next year I will try to attend the Expo a bit earlier in the day and perhaps go by myself or some other runners to spend time at some of the booths there.

8/11/11: The Working Man
Paul got a promotion at work this week!!!! Starting this past Monday he now gets to work 8-4:45. Which means he gets to come home so much earlier and we can all actually eat dinner together and spend some time in the evening as a family. The girls (and me) are loving it!
Unfortunately for him, his position has moved him to the office, which means no more basketball shorts and t-shirts to work. It also meant we had to do some shopping this past weekend to get some new shoes, shirts, and pants. He now also has a desk he needs to fill up with pictures of us so we sent him with the one above today. We are so proud of him!
Paul celebrated by taking the girls to KSU's track and going for a run in the jogging stroller. Of course the girls got to get out and run too. According to Paul, Morgan is a natural. I'll still hang on to my hope of softball instead of track one day.

6/29/11: Ch Ch Ch Chia!!!
(*Note, this post is originally from Paul's blog buckeyerunner.blogspot.com under the Chia Seeds page)
Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia!!!
No, this article is NOT about the Chia Pet, however, it is about Chia seeds. I know all of you are asking, "Why the hell is he talking about Chia Seeds?" Well, in a nutshell, because I read it in a book.....
Chia Seeds
I first learned about Chia Seeds while reading the book Born to Run.
In there, the author, Christopher McDougall, talks about a time when he was running in the canyons with the Tarahumara Indian tribe and he was given a drink that made him feel re-energized shortly after taking it. It turns out, what he drank was a variation of the chia seed drink iskiate, or chia fresca.
I am not a health nut by any means, but after reading about how the Tarahumara Indians live off of this and Pinole
, while running anywhere from 50-100 miles PER DAY. Yes, per day. I will get into more about the Tarahumara Indians and their culture in a future post. Anyway, back to why I am on a chia seed kick. I read up on the benefits of it, which actually helps out runners tremendously (I'll tell you why in a minute):

- Chia is very rich in omega-3 acids, containing more omega-3's than a more popular seed the flax seed.
- They provide fiber (25 grams gives you 6.9 grams of fiber)
- They contain other important nutrients such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, molybdenum, niacin, and zing.
- If you allow the seeds to sit in water for 20-30 minutes (shorter if shaken up), the seeds form a gel. This gel can be used to slow down the process by which enzymes break down carbs and convert them to sugar.
- Chia seeds hold 10-12 times their body weight in water, keeping you hydrated longer without the need to drink water all the time while running.
There is more Omega-3 in it than salmon, more calcium than 2% milk, and more antioxidants than fresh blueberries. They are also extremely energizing. I have found it to be a great replacement to my daily double shot of espresso.
For a distance runner, it provides not only the above advantages, but also help to slowly release carbs into the bloodstream. It is the perfect natural replacement for all of those energy gels you are spending your money on.
Chia Seed Uses
I bought this 3lb bag of Chia Seeds
off of Amazon for $15 (click the link to take you directly to the page). This should last me quite a bit, and is much cheaper than all the health food websites that charge you 3 times as much for this same amount.
Chia Gel

Chia Gel
Looks delicious right? That is a chia gel. I mix 1/3 cup of chia seeds to 1 cup water. I shake it for 15-20 seconds, let it sit for a minute or two, then shake again. It immediately begins to form a gel, which can then be added to salads, smoothies, muffins, cereal, almost anything you want really. Chia seeds don't have a taste. Whatever you use it in, it will taste as if the chia seeds are not even in it.
Chia Fresca
Yum, right?!?! This is Chia Fresca. It is the energy drink I use before going out on a run. I take one tablespoon chia seeds, and about 10-12 ounces of water, shake for 15 seconds, let sit for about a minute, then add some lemon or lime juice and a small amount of sugar or honey for an added sweetness to it. I keep them in the fridge so that when I drink them it is actually a refreshing chilled drink. It's not chunky or gross drinking it either.

5/5/11: A Day at the Dam.
It finally stopped raining for 24 hours here in the O-HI-O and I decided to take advantage and go for a run on the dam. I've only been able to get up there 2-3 times so far this year because of the weather. Kelly had off work today so her and Mack joined us. Kelly and I got a good run in while I can guarantee the girls caused chaos for my mom. A 2 seat stroller and 3 kids usually involves some sort of argument. They ended on Rylee and Mackenzie sitting in the stroller while Morgan helped my mom push. Which is a total pain in the ass because like I mentioned before she's bossy independent. Morgan was sitting pretty nicely on the black part near Rylee and Mackenzie's feet but apparently Rylee didn't like that very much and kept kicking her off. Once we were done running Morgan and Mackenzie got out and ran the rest of the way back to the car with us. What a gorgeous day!
